Thousands of Blackbirds Drop Dead From the Sky.
The first paragraph on Reuters sums it up well, it can be an easily removed plot of a film by Alfred Hitchcock or Stephen King. Thousands of blackbirds began to fall dead mysteriously from the sky on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, in Beebe Arkansas and no one knows why.
The possible explanations that have been around are high altitude hail, lightning, or the stress of exploding fireworks. Others are beginning to hint that there must have been a chemical leak in the area, while others are speculating on a UFO.
Add to this the nearby massive fish kills, where more than 100,000 drums have washed ashore in the Arkansas River, and the circumstances, of course, are suspicious.
When you look at it as a coincidence, it gives more weight to the theory that there was some kind of industrial accident in the area, we just do not know about ourselves. It's strange that it was almost exclusively blackbirds from the sky and drum rivver. In the most dangerous leaks, you can expect a more diversified victim list.
Was it the weather? Man-made or foreign? We may never know, and that's a shame, because on some level, it was the most interetsing piece of history of the holiday weekend.

Trojan Malware Targets Android Phones and Mobile Devices

The most sophisticated malware ever found which affects the Android operating system was discovered in the wild this week in China and is starting to make security researchers sit up and take notice.

Nicknamed "Geinimi" after the first release build, this Trojan is capable of compromising a significant quantity of personal data from a user's phone and sending it to remote servers, making it the first Android Geinimi malware in the wild that displays the capabilities of a botnet.

Similar to a computer bot-net, once the malware is installed on the phone a user's phone or mobile device has the potential to receive commands from a remote server that allow the owner of that server to check the phone and potentially be used to induce the user into loading multiple malicious applications or, where appropriate, used to secretly reveal user's location information.

The researchers found the code to perform the following functions:

- Send the location coordinates (location order)
- Leave the device identifier (IMEI and IMSI)
- Download and prompts the user to install an app
- To require you to uninstall an application
- Enumerate and send a list of applications installed on the server

But they say that have yet to see the code fully functional, so there may be other functions that simply are not yet enabled.

So far, the only Trojan Geinimi was found attached to discount third-party applications in China, so keep your phone clean by only downloading applications from trusted vendors, keep an eye on what permissions the installer asks for access to and consider downloading a security app for your mobile phone that analyzes the applications before installing.

4Chan Website Hit By Massive DDoS Attack

For whatever reason, the 4Chan.org website is being hammered by a massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, right now, that has brought the entire website, with the exception of a single status page, to its knees.

The site is used to huge traffic volumes, and the scope of this attack has not quite become completely evident. It is changing rapidly and the site may come back up quickly, or may be down the rest of the day. It's just too early to tell.

The 4chan site is generally an anonymous site that is known for its "anything goes" policies regarding the types of allowable content posted by its users. Violence and pornography are on the site, and surprisingly, sit next to some incredibly well done art or photography.

It is a strange universe, but you have to be prepared to possibly stumble across a page that you will later wish you hadn't.

The site has been credited with starting many of the internet's most popular memes, and even conducting a few accidental DDoS's of its own, by it's members all trying to view a single page at the same time.

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit or Superbike World Championship

In another situation where two extraordinary games are being released at the same time for the same gaming platforms, we find that Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and SBK X: Superbike World Championship are both being released this week in trying to scurry in under the Christmas shopping deadline.

Comparing the two games might be at odds since the settings are not exactly similar and one is automobiles, while the other is motorcycles. But they are both racing games, in a sea of first person shooters and both games are highly anticipated. Although, I think Need For Speed will have a considerably better showing due to the franchise history.

The SBK X: Superbike Championship game will be released for PS3 and xBox 360, while NFS: HP will be released for PC, PS3, Wii, xBox and even iPhone. The advantage clearly goes to NFS: Hot Pursuit for the simple fact that the extra game systems provide a much broader customer base.

However, it becomes more of an even match when you consider the racing surfaces and driver opponents between the two games. The SBK motorcycle game has 14 tracks and 90 known racers, each with their own skill sets and racing histories to draw from for the game. While the car game is a more open road course style game similar to any of the Burnout games, which were also released by Criterion Studios. It is a different style of racing, and opinions go both ways on which is better.

Personally, I much prefer the track layouts to the open road style with interfering traffic or other hazards crossing the road. It is more in line with the spirit of auto racing for the sake of the machinery, than of the need to dodge (or ram!) traffic that has a different reason for being on the road.

But whatever style you prefer, both games are expected to do well, and for a quick stocking stuffer for yourself, you could certainly do worse this holiday season.

LittleBigPlanet 2 or Mass Effect 2?

The gaming world is in for a pleasant surprise the third week in January. Two of the most popular video games of all time are both getting sequels released the same week in January 2011 and it is shaping up to be a title battle.

The week of January 18th 2011, BioWare is going to release the sequel to its phenomenal multi-platinum, multi-player, science fantasy roll playing game Mass Effect with Mass Effect 2 and the battle for 22nd century life will continue.

And if that's not enough reason for brick and mortar stores like Gamestop or Best Buy, not to mention on line retailers such as Amazon, to celebrate the start of a great 2011 gaming season, they will also be releasing the sequel to Little Big Planet which is also simply named: LittleBigPlanet 2.

One of the top 10 all time selling games for the console gaming systems, LBP2 is sure to have a smashing launch as well. And it will be interesting to watch and see which game has a better launch and reception.
My guess is that the title will go to Little Big Planet 2, since it has a far larger fan base in older players and women. But I could be mistaken. What do you think?

The release in January of the Ultimate Fighting Championships newest addition to the series will be titled: UFC Trainer and will use the power of the Kinect or Wii motion capture devices, to let the player interact with the game by acting out the moves, instead of pushing joysticks and buttons.

What that means in reality is that the player will have to duck to avoid being smashed in the head, or have to a much better chance to strike an opponent, if he can throw a punch at lightning fast speed. If not, then your virtual fighter is likely to be pummeled into a gooey blob of jelly.

But that is mostly the point of UFC Trainer and the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition sponsored by the Ultimate Fighting Championship anyway, so at least all the teen age boys who will flock to this game, can do so without actually getting their brains rattled in their heads.
